What major should I take to break into the fashion world?

D B asked:

Like, for example designing jewelry for Disney Couture, or sketching ideas and becoming part of an artistic team for big names like Chanel or Marc Jacobs, or something fun like Toki Doki or Harajuku By Gwen Stefanie…

What credible and flexible (as in it can easily apply to other fields if I were to take a different route in life) majors do you recommend?

Thanks. :)

take classes in pop culture, marketing and media. art history will focus on art — studying painting can help you learn about color, shape, etc. also, when designing a clothing item, understand the difference between clothing item and costume. study public relations, survey research — you must be in touch with your public to be successful, communication, english would help too. don`t get too hung up on drawing, sketching outfits is one thing. study advertising (look at the gap product red line, they have an amazing ad campaign. or obama`s election speeches, etc). also look how everything from clothing lines, to electronics, to whatever has some sort of artist-athlete endorsement. do you thing jordan designed his shoes or wears his own underwear?, or do certain bands care if they`re playing fender or esp guitars? watch austin powers, and count the number of product references in that movie.

my suggestion, study media, business and marketing with some classes in english and art.

major in art history. it’ll give you a wonderful range of ideas and a great perspective on beauty through the ages.
