dan asked:
I have several pieces of mostly 14K gold that was given to me by a family member (for the purpose of selling). What is the best way to go about getting actual (or close to) value for these?
You need to find out what the value of the pieces are from an appraiser if you want to keep the jewelry intact. If you want to separate the gold from the other metals that make up the jewelry, then you need to do some chemistry work. Gold will dissolve in either Aquia Regia, which is a combination of acids, from which the gold can be extracted in it’s pure form. Gold can also be changed into Gold Chloride by dissolving it in a solution of water, calcium chloride, and some acid, such as sulfuric acid. The gold can then be selectively precipitated out of solution. It all depends on how you want to sell the jewelry, as is, for what somebody would pay for it, or as separate metal for the market value of the gold itself.
Hi ive seen collections of scrap gold go on ebay for up 200 or 300 pounds and by scrap i mean scrap broken chains broken rings beyond descrition but still 300 quid isnt bad for that type, if you go look on ebay go to jewellery and i think its mixed lots you can get a good estimate on how much yours should go for , good luck w.w
